Next Monday, October 24th, we celebrate United Nations day and the mission of that organization. This year, the emphasis is on taking concrete action to help accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals, working toward a healthy planet.
An important component of the PYP is the Action Cycle. We continuously choose, act, and reflect in our daily lives. As we decide how we will spend our weekend, what to have for dinner, or who we will invite for Thanksgiving, we unconsciously reflect on the consequences of certain choices and then make our decisions and act upon them. The UN has created 17 posters depicting concrete actions that we can participate in to help meet the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These posters give us some ways to specifically use the PYP action cycle and think about the way we respond to our everyday choices.
On Monday, October 24th, I will share a Commitment to Peace with the students at West TV. Please read over it with your children. Teachers will also share it in the classroom and discuss the concepts of tolerance, being principled, and replenishing the Earth’s resources.
As students become more familiar with the International Baccalaureate’s Learner Profile, we see these characteristics in the students’ daily behavior and interaction with one another.
Commitment to Peace
October 24, 2016
We, the students of West Tualatin View School, commit to being peaceful.
We promise to be open-minded and tolerant of others’ differences.
We share this world with children from many countries, so we will be principled, acting with fairness and honesty.
We will try to stay balanced keeping our bodies, hearts, and minds focused on caring for ourselves and for others.
Our Earth is important; we will be reflective and mindful of the way we use and replenish its resources.
We, the students of West TV, commit to being peaceful.
