Off to a fabulous start...
If you haven't had an opportunity to visit classrooms, please stop by the West TV rooms. There is so much to see and learn about in all the grades. By looking at the "Academics" tab, you can see what units each grade level is involved in right now. Most of the students have been discussing community, rights, roles, and responsibilities. It is wonderful to see the students coming up with ideas about what makes a good friend or how a community of learners will be successful.
Despite the turmoil in our world, the kids at West TV are learning how to be peacemakers in their classrooms. Teachers are using literature, role play, community circles, discussions, reflections, and dramatic play to encourage inquiry into what we value in our families, communities, and right here at West TV. Kindergarteners are learning how to make choices and take on responsibilities as our youngest students, while the 5th graders are learning about the rights and responsibilities citizens participate in through organized government.
Students are also learning what it means to have a growth mindset and the power of "yet." Instead of dwelling on a fixed mindset, students are learning how to change their thinking and believe in effort and perseverance. Here are some of the statements that are being celebrated, "People can change;" "I can grow my brain;" "A good attitude is important in learning;" and "I'm a problem solver." These attitudes and mantras are setting students up for success. When faced with challenges and setbacks, how will students approach them? Hopefully, they will have a growth mindset which will encourage multiple attempts and less frustration. What a great way to start the year!
